UPnP AV

UPnP AV is a standard for clients (called renderers) requesting and receiving content, such as audio/video files, from servers. The standard is widely employed in various devices, for example in set-top boxes acting as UPnP AV renderes requesting files from software based UPnP AV servers running on commodity PCs.

The UPnP AV standard by definition is limited to certain types of devices and only supports a restricted set of functionality. Many devices or sources of media, such as TV receivers, CD or DVD players, cameras, or IPTV are not supported directly.

The NMM UPnP AV server overcomes these limitations. It enables access - and to some extent also control - to all devices and sources of media available in the network. It thereby combines the 'NMM network' with standard UPnP AV devices. For example, if the user moves from the living-room to the bedroom, a single press on the remote control hands over the media presentation to the current location. When using the NMM UPnP AV server all this is possible using existing and unmodified UPnP AV renderers, such as commodity set-top boxes. NMM UPnP AV server handover
