IP Multicast networking allows for efficiently sending a single stream, such as an MPEG-2 stream, to a number of receivers. IP multicast is a well-established technique within wired networks (LAN), in particular for distributing digital television in hotels, hospitals, cruise ships, or individual homes. However, today's commodity devices and infrastructres for wireless 802.11 networks (WLAN) do not properly support multicast networking. Problems range from severe bandwidth limitations for multicast streams to complete overloading and failure of WLANs when only transmitting a single multicast stream to a single wireless client.
The Wireless Recaster based on NMM overcomes these limitations by transparently re-casting multicast streams available in the LAN to unicast streams for wireless clients. This enables the integration of wireless clients, such as set-top boxes, laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), ultra mobile PCs (UMPCs), or mobile phones into the existing streaming infrastructure. In addition - and even more important - the Wireless Recaster allows to optimize the sending of unicast streams to a number of wireless clients connected to a single WLAN access point (AP). As a pure software-based solution, this allows for seamlessly increasing the number of simultaneous users in existing wireless networks by exploiting all available bandwidth up to the limits of today's wireless networks. |
